Untangling the Knots in Your Soul: Healing the Parts You’ve Been Taught to Ignore

There are corners of your heart where pain has been stored for years—places you were taught to dismiss, feelings you were told to “just get over,” and memories that linger quietly beneath the surface. These knots in your soul are not meaningless; they are signals, not shameful flaws. They are the body and spirit telling you something needs attention, telling you that God’s restoration is both necessary and near.

Neuroscience reveals something profound: unprocessed emotions shape not just how we feel but how our brains fire, how our nervous system responds, how our body holds tension. Trauma, grief, or repeated relational wounding create strong, automatic pathways in our neural networks. Stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline flood the system, keeping us alert, anxious, or emotionally flat. But this same research also uncovers hope—neuroplasticity. The brain can reorganize itself; it can grow new connections, release tension in the nervous system, and allow for emotional recalibration. Healing is literally possible at a biological level, just as Scripture promises it spiritually.

God’s invitation into these hidden places of our hearts is radical. Isaiah 61 speaks of binding up the brokenhearted and proclaiming liberty to the captives. Healing is not a cosmetic fix; it is the restoration of the inner temple, the sanctifying of the mind and heart. It is the work of Spirit-led transformation. As we allow God’s truth to illuminate what we have ignored, the neural knots of fear, shame, and unresolved grief can begin to untangle. Prayer, contemplation, meditation on Scripture, journaling, and even the deliberate recounting of our stories become spiritual and biological exercises. The Spirit is rewiring both our hearts and brains simultaneously, restoring peace where there was chaos.

Healing also demands courage. To name the knots, to dwell in them rather than avoid them, is a form of spiritual heroism. It is a refusal to let our history dictate our identity. It is saying: I am not my wounds. I am not my shame. I am made for wholeness, and God is faithful to bring it forth. When we approach healing this way, every memory, every suppressed emotion, every trace of old grief becomes an opportunity for resurrection within us.

This is empowerment at the intersection of faith and science: every thought we choose to meditate on, every prayer we offer intentionally, every reflection we allow ourselves is a realignment of both our neural architecture and our spiritual orientation. God is the ultimate neuroscientist and theologian, gently untying knots we could never undo on our own, showing us that our inner life is meant to be vibrant, awake, and free.

The parts of you that have been ignored are sacred, not defective. They are invitations into deeper intimacy with God and into the wholeness you were created for. Untangling these knots is not easy—it is messy, and it is slow—but it is life-giving. It is the beginning of walking in a freedom so profound that every area of your life, mind, and relationships can eventually reflect the restoration of the inner soul.
